Coyote Smart™ is a program of Wildlife Emergency Services dedicated to improving the way communities understand, prevent, and respond to human-coyote conflicts.

Led by human-wildlife conflict specialist Rebecca Dmytryk, Coyote-Smart brings together an advisory team of experts to provide field-tested science-based solutions for urban and rural communities.

Coyote-Smart™ offers services to individuals, neighborhoods, homeowner groups, nonprofits, agencies, and municipalities dealing with coyote concerns in both urban and rural settings.

Education: We provide public and professional presentations on coyote behavior, pet and livestock safety, attractant reduction, seasonal activity, proper hazing techniques, and best practices for reducing conflict.

Consultation: We help assess specific coyote concerns and develop practical response strategies for residents, communities, organizations, and government agencies.

Field Investigation: We investigate recurring coyote activity, suspected feeding, attractants, incident patterns, and problem locations using site assessments, surveillance, interviews, and analysis of sightings reports.

Targeted Intervention: When needed, we provide boots-on-the-ground response, including targeted hazing, aversion conditioning, hotspot assessment, and more intensive intervention when circumstances warrant it.

Program Support: We help communities strengthen their coyote response programs by reviewing reporting systems, response protocols, public information, mapping, surveillance strategies, staff training, and incident classification.

Tools & Resources: When resources allow, we provide practical materials such as Coyote Scare Sticks, hazing props, educational handouts, signage, surveillance cameras, and other equipment that supports effective community response.

Our Approach: Not every sighting requires intervention, and not every conflict requires the same response. Coyote-Smart™ focuses on understanding the circumstances first, then matching the response to the behavior, location, and level of risk.
